Nestled in the vibrant heart of Honolulu’s Chinatown, Livestock Tavern is a standout American restaurant that artfully combines bold flavors with refined comfort. The moment you step inside this stylish spot on 49 N Hotel St, you’re enveloped in a warm and inviting atmosphere, perfect for everything from casual dinners to special celebrations.
Livestock Tavern’s menu is a celebration of expertly crafted dishes that pay homage to classic American cuisine with a modern twist. Their Tavern Burger and Fries delivers a satisfying, juicy bite that’s each bit as memorable as their renowned Smoked Prime Rib Dinner, which boasts rich, tender meat kissed by alluring smoky undertones. Sea lovers will revel in the Smoked Octopus – tender, flavorful, and decadently smoky – while the Seared Duck Breast & Duck Confit are culinary highlights that showcase impeccable technique, with perfectly crisp skin and succulent, melt-in-your-mouth textures.
The kitchen’s craftsmanship shines especially through dishes like the delicate Petite Lobster Roll and savory Maryland Blue Crab Cakes, which combine fresh, vibrant ingredients with bold, comforting flavors. Not to be missed are the House Made Cornbread and indulgent Oxtail Mac & Cheese, both of which envelop you in rich, buttery goodness that lingers fondly on the palate.
Dining here is truly a sensory experience. The Brussels Sprouts are brilliantly crisped with just the right balance of caramelization and bite, while the Scallop Mushroom Risotto envelops your senses in warm, earthy creaminess at every spoonful. Guests also rave about the Prime Rib Benedict and the inventive Duck Confit Nuggets, which add delightful texture and flavor contrasts to the menu.
The drink selection complements the food perfectly, with expertly crafted Old Fashioned Cocktails and smooth Martinies that elevate the dining experience without overpowering the dishes.
Customer reviews consistently highlight the exceptional quality of the food and the welcoming ambiance. Alex B was impressed enough by the lamb skewer – “garlicky and tender topped with tasty bits of sundried tomatoes and feta” – to overlook some initial service jitters, a testament to the cuisine’s compelling allure. Peace Traveler’s glowing praise of the Duck confit with saffron risotto captures the essence of Livestock Tavern’s cooking philosophy: crispy, tender, and perfectly portioned.
Whether you’re savoring a full rack of lamb with roast vegetables as Erin Glasmond did, or exploring the restaurant’s European and American style meats as Farm LL found uniquely satisfying, Livestock Tavern promises a memorable journey of flavors grounded in quality and care.
Parking is convenient with municipal lots nearby or street parking, making it easy for both locals and visitors to enjoy one of Chinatown’s best dining experiences. With its carefully curated menu, stylish setting, and authentic attention to detail, Livestock Tavern isn’t just a meal—it’s a destination.
Dinner for three. I was waffling between five or four stars, as service was initially a little shaken (seemed like it was the waitress’ first night almost) but the food was just so good, I gave them the benefit of the doubt. And she did recommend the lamb skewer, which was garlicky and tender topped with tasty bits of sun-dried tomatoes and feta - delicious, my wife loved the seafood ravioli with lobster gravy and our friend enjoyed the duck breast. Two creme brûlées and the caramel bread pudding was dessert. Ladies loved the touch of lillikoi in the brûlées and the bread pudding was some of the best I’ve ever had! Prices were reasonable and portions generous; without an appetizer I was still stuffed in the end and I’m a big eater. Ambience was fine but it is an open space with high ceilings and brick walls, so even though only half full it was very loud. All in all glad we finally got to visit and highly recommend!
Wow! Definitely one of the best meals I have had in Honolulu! Seated me at open in with no reservation and no problem. I got a nice corner back table facing the restaurant. 1. Duck confit with saffron risotto - omgggg the duck leg was cooked to PERFECTION! The skin was super crispy and puffy, and the meat was fall apart, tender and sweet. The risotto was properly covering the plate and the portion was really large. There’s a few lightly sautéed apricots and figs on top that complimented this very autumnal dish. 2. Rack of lamb with seasonal veggies and balsamic mint sauce. The lamb was cooked perfectly and grilled nicely with no strange gas flavor from the grill. The portion was good. I got the half order which was four bones or two double chops. The temperature was more medium than medium rare, but I think it was still delicious. The olives in the vegetable medley underneath were a lovely addition. I’m not sure the balsamic and mint combination really hit it out of the park for me. I would have preferred traditional mint jelly on the side or just the balsamic reduction as the option. 3. Oxtail Mac and cheese with smoked Gouda - wow definitely one of the best dishes I’ve ever had in my life and I think this is a lot. This was just so rich, the cheese was fantastic with big chunks of garlic through it and Parmesan cheese on top. It’s kind of like a meaty French onion soup pasta…. too much…. too delicious. Kanack attack incoming! Did not order any drinks but went totally crazy with the food! Not cheap, but 1/2 the price of similar restaurants. Thanks for an amazing meal :)
It was lunchtime, but they had prepared a dinner menu for me specially. The filet was soft and delicious. If you want to eat European and American style meat in Hawaii, it costs $53, but this is the only place you can go.
Our table ordered a number of different appetizers and they all came out at roughly the same time even though it was pretty busy when we got there. They were unexpectedly delicious, so anything on that section of the menu would be good. I had the full rack of lamb with roast vegetables, and the other ones at my table ordered the mushroom risotto, duck confit, and prime rib with roast vegetables. We were seated at a high table with a booth behind it only a few minutes after we got there, less than 5 minutes if I had to put a number on it. The person who seated us was nice and the waiter was very helpful. The general atmosphere of the place was very lively. The decorations made it feel like someone's living room, or maybe a study room. The high ceilings went a long way towards making it not feel claustrophobic, which is something I was very thankful for. The menu prices were reasonable for the area, even a little cheap actually, but I would've not guessed as much from the way the food tasted. Overall it was a nice experience and even if you don't order much you'll very likely still enjoy your time there.
One of the best restaurants in Chinatown. Excellent menu and stylish ambiance. Definitely worth the trip. Parking available at the municipal lots or some street parking.
Tried another spot and they didn't have room, which was for the best. Came here and they had space for our party of 3. Loved the aloha service, nice beer and whiskey selection and loved the plates. At first I thought the small plates were overpriced, but once we got them it was healthy so worth it. Street parking and parking lots around, including Marin and Beratania municipal.
Get your butt in here now. This is some of the most wholesome, epic, elevated food I've had in so long. The Sweet Dreams drink is the best mule I've ever had, and the risotto under the lamb shank left me speechless. Flavorful steaks and attentive waiters. 72 out of 5 stars. Can't believe this place wasnt packed. Edit: if you pass on $10 passion fruit creme brulee, you're an idiot. Edit edit: that $200 meal was better than some of our $400 meals on the mainland.
We ordered the oxtail Mac and cheese as a starter but we couldn’t even finish it the serving was huge…lots of shredded oxtail inside 8/10. Scallop mushroom risotto was out of this world, 10/10. The lamb shack with pumpkin risotto was good, 8/10. Nice, rustic, cozy place. Lighting and ambiance was nice at night. Excellent service! Moderate wait time for food. Worth the wait. Serving sizes are huge. There are onions in the risotto and Mac and cheese which isn’t really my thing but it was delicious nonetheless. Excited to come back and try other items on the menu!
